I stopped studying religion when I stopped needing to study things I never have and don’t believe I ever will see. My young adult life was filled with the pursuit of religious study. Being a devote Mormon, I prepared for and served a mission for the organization. I spent countless nights reading the books I was expected to proselyte from. I read them in the library, in my car, at church on weeknights – even at the beach. Thousands and thousands of re-read pages later I have a head filled with useless stories of imaginary people. I’m not particularly fond of the accomplishment.
I prefer, now, to study human nature. I can see it, feel it, and experience it. Human nature is amazing. It’s beautiful, and most importantly, it’s responsive. I love to hear what people have to say and love to watch what they do.
And it is all real. Something I missed out on in my younger years.
